Who was Édouard Manet?

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was a French painter and one of the most influential artists of the 19th century. He challenged academic conventions and paved the way for Impressionism. He was a close friend of Claude Monet, Edgar Degas and Berthe Morisot and is often called the father of Impressionism. His main works hang at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

Are Manet and Monet the same person?

No — Édouard Manet (1832–1883) and Claude Monet (1840–1926) were two different artists and close friends, frequently confused because of their almost identical names.

Manet's most famous paintings

Olympia (1863)

Olympia is Manet's most celebrated and controversial work. A naked woman stares directly at the viewer without shame. It shocked Paris and now hangs at the Musée d'Orsay.

Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe (1863)

Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe (Luncheon on the Grass) showed a naked woman picnicking with clothed men — breaking all conventions. Rejected by the Salon, it became famous at the Salon des Refusés.

A Bar at the Folies-Bergère (1882)

A Bar at the Folies-Bergère is Manet's final masterpiece, combining a direct gaze with a baffling mirror reflection. It hangs at the Courtauld Gallery in London.

Nana (1877)

Nana shows a semi-dressed woman applying makeup while an elegant gentleman waits in the background.

Music in the Tuileries Gardens (1862)

Music in the Tuileries is one of the first truly modern paintings — a snapshot of Parisian social life with no mythological framework.

Manet's strong outlines, deep blues and blacks and direct gazes make his paintings outstanding posters for modern interiors. Pair with Monet, Degas or Berthe Morisot for a complete Impressionist wall.
